Issue:
Domestic Violence and Sexual Exploitation of Children
Overview:
Violence
and abuse/sexual abuse is difficult to bring under a
common and unique definition because types and forms
differ from occurrence to occurrence, place to place,
person to person let done domestic violence. But some
working definitions are as follows:
“Child violence is any act perpetrated against
a child that harms the child in an emotional, physical
or sexual way. It is also the physical, emotional, verbal
or sexual abuse of a child. Abuse is defined as repeated
or continuing harm to the child in an emotional, physical
or sexual way.
In
this loose definition there are two aspects, those that
happen once and those that occur and reoccur. Child
is abused in the house and out side the house, working
place, care giving center, learning centers as well.
Statistics
reveals that 7268 children have been abused in the year
2003.Daily 2 children have been rapped and 2 nos. children
killed on an average over the year. (Source: BSAF Resource
center)
Action
should be taken to stop child abuse and it should be
started from house to every sphere of life. There are
some cases of child abuse that happen unknowingly due
to lack of awareness. There are some cases of committing
suicide and becoming prostitute due to lack of counseling,
proper treatment and rehabilitation. Most of the victims
try to conceal the occurrence due to social stigma.
Society needs to change its attitude towards victims.
Existing laws should be amended and proper enforcement
taken in this regards. Lack of information flow is another
constraint. Therefore multi sectoral intervention should
be taken to overcome the domestic violence and sexual
exploitation of children.
